Bryan Medical Center has been awarded Bronze status in the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Joy in Medicine™ Health System Recognition Program, highlighting their commitment to enhancing physician well-being and combating burnout.

The Joy in Medicine™ Health System Recognition Program, established by the AMA in 2019, acknowledges health organizations that prioritize physician well-being through structured efforts to reduce work-related burnout. The program offers three levels of recognition—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—each reflecting an organization’s investment in key areas such as commitment, assessment, leadership, efficiency of practice environment, teamwork, and support. Recognition is valid for two years, during which organizations are expected to maintain and advance their initiatives promoting professional fulfillment among clinicians.

By achieving Bronze status, Bryan Medical Center joins a select group of health systems nationwide dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for physicians. This recognition underscores Bryan Medical Center’s proactive measures to address the root causes of physician burnout, thereby enhancing the quality of care provided to patients.

The AMA emphasizes that the goal of the Joy in Medicine™ program is to unite the healthcare community in building a culture committed to clinician well-being. Christine Sinsky, M.D., AMA vice president of professional satisfaction, stated, “The goal of the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program is to unite the health care community in building a nationwide culture committed to the well-being of clinical care teams by helping health organizations invest in action plans promoting professional fulfillment and meaning that clinicians find in caring for their patients.”

Bryan Medical Center’s Approach to Physician Wellness

Bryan Medical Center Medical Staff embraced the AMA Joy in Medicine program. The program served as a roadmap to expand and develop evidence-based strategies to create organizational changes to improve overall provider well-being.

Key Initiatives

Increasing awareness of the importance of provider well-being

Expanding the Wellness Advisory Team to include representatives from all specialties

Obtaining leadership support for the wellness program

Creating more recognition opportunities

Listening campaigns to identify barriers and provide resources to assist the area in developing and implementing solutions

Creating a peer-to-peer support program to provide emotional first aid

Identifying and working to reduce administrative burdens (i.e., documentation requirements)

Since implementation of the above initiatives, we have seen positive responses in many areas related to provider well-being. There is an increase in awareness of the importance of considering provider well-being when making system changes and increased collaboration with our providers. Our medical staff is also more open to peer support. Medical Staff leadership has identified and taken steps to increase recognition opportunities for providers. This has created a culture of highlighting the great work that is being done every day by our providers and teams. Future initiatives will include resurveying our providers to determine the measurable impact of our work and continue to identify opportunities to enhance provider well-being.

The LifeBridge Nebraska physician wellness program can have far-reaching effects for the whole medical office team, extending well beyond just the physicians themselves. LifeBridge can help to promote a healthier and more supportive work environment that positively impacts every member of the team, including nurses, administrative staff, technicians, and support personnel.

Here’s how LifeBridge Nebraska can benefit the entire medical office team:

Improved Team Morale: When physicians are well-supported and less stressed, they are more likely to interact positively with their colleagues. This contributes to a more positive and collaborative atmosphere within the office, which can boost team morale.

Enhanced Communication: Reduced stress and burnout among physicians often lead to better communication with the rest of the team. Clear and effective communication is crucial in healthcare settings to prevent errors and ensure seamless patient care.

Reduced Turnover: Physician wellness programs can help retain experienced and talented doctors. This reduces the need for frequent recruitment and training, which can be disruptive to the entire team.

Increased Office Efficiency: A well-functioning physician, both mentally and physically, can manage their patient load more efficiently. This, in turn, helps the office run smoothly, reducing bottlenecks and waiting times for patients.

Better Patient Care: When physicians are healthy and happy, they are more likely to provide better patient care. This not only improves patient outcomes but also reduces the workload and stress for the entire team, as complications and emergencies are minimized.

Decreased Administrative Burden: Physician wellness programs often include support for time management, administrative tasks, and electronic health records. This can reduce the administrative burden on physicians and support staff, allowing them to focus on patient care.

Positive Role Modeling: Physicians who prioritize their well-being can serve as role models for the entire team. This can encourage others to adopt healthier lifestyles and stress management techniques, leading to a healthier overall workplace culture.

Reduced Workplace Stress: A less stressed medical office team is less likely to experience burnout and compassion fatigue. This not only improves individual job satisfaction but also reduces the risk of medical errors.

Cost Savings: In the long run, physician wellness programs can lead to cost savings for the medical office. Reduced turnover, fewer medical errors, and improved patient outcomes can translate into financial benefits for the entire organization.

LifeBridge is not just beneficial for physicians but can have a ripple effect that positively impacts the entire medical office team. This program can help create a healthier, more supportive, and efficient work environment, ultimately leading to improved patient care and overall satisfaction for both staff and patients.

National Physician Suicide Awareness Day, September 17th, encourages individual and system action to better support physician mental health and wellbeing

National Physician Suicide Awareness Day, September 17th, encourages individual and system action to better support physician mental health and wellbeing

Today LifeBridge Nebraska honors National Physician Suicide Awareness Day (NPSA Day) to help shift the health care system from one where physicians think burnout, depression or suicidal thoughts are something they must overcome by themselves to one where they see the support system around them. As a NPSA Day Supporting Organization,
LifeBridge Nebraska is helping to break the stigma of seeking help for physician mental health and wellness.

Physicians have one of the highest suicide rates of any profession. More than half of physicians know a physician who has either considered, attempted or died by suicide in their career, and it is estimated that a million Americans lose their physician to suicide each year. Unfortunately, the state of physician wellbeing in 2023 remains low, while residents and medical students struggle even more.

Three-quarters of medical students have felt inappropriate feelings of anger, tearfulness or anxiety, as well as 7 in 10 of residents and over half of physicians.

More than half of medical students, a third of physicians and 4 in 10 residents have felt hopeless or that they have no purpose.

Over two-thirds of medical students report withdrawing from family, friends and coworkers, as well as more than half of residents and 4 in 10 of physicians.

These feelings can lead to burnout and, when left untreated, can cause more cases of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and lead to suicidal thoughts for physicians, directly impacting physician suicide rates. However, physicians, residents and students have identified solutions they need to improve their mental health and wellbeing. Now is the time to get mental health resources in the hands of current and future physicians, to remove intrusive mental health questions from licensing and credentialing applications and to take action to create a culture of wellbeing in medical schools, residency programs and workplaces.

Learn the seven actions to help reduce physician burnout and ensure physicians’ struggles don’t become mental health emergencies.

Learn the Vital Signs

Encourage mental health reflection

Shae suicide prevention resources

Prepare before a moment in crisis

Check in with a physician

Remove intrusive mental health questions

Create a culture of wellbeing

About National Physician Suicide Awareness Day
National Physician Suicide Awareness Day (#NPSADay) is a reminder and call to action. It’s a time to talk – and to act – so physicians’ struggles don’t become mental health emergencies. Prevention begins with learning the signs, starting the conversations, removing intrusive mental health questions and sharing the resources that can help those in distress seek mental health care. National Physician Suicide Awareness Day is an annual event that takes place on September 17, with a mission to break down the culture of silence around physician mental health.

[Lincoln, June 2023] – This legislative session, the State of Nebraska took a significant step towards supporting the physician community with the passing of SafeHaven legislation LB286, introduced by Senator Lynne Walz on behalf of the Nebraska Medical Association (NMA). This important legislation, which was included in the omnibus bill, LB227, provides vital confidentiality protections for physicians participating in the LifeBridge Nebraska physician wellness program. It aims to foster a safe and secure environment for medical professionals to address their personal mental health and wellbeing without fear of reprisal or breach of privacy. The legislation passed on final reading on June 1st, 2023, and will take effect September 2, 2023, allowing LifeBridge Nebraska to operate under enhanced safeguards for participating physicians. This action by the Nebraska Legislature recognizes the invaluable contributions of the leaders of Nebraska’s healthcare teams and the importance of providing a safe space for physicians to seek help with mental health and wellness.

LifeBridge Nebraska, a revolutionary program that connects physicians with a peer physician coach, is available to all physicians licensed in the state of Nebraska at no cost. The program is available to physicians at all stages of their career, regardless of NMA membership status.

SafeHaven legislation LB286, as part of LB227, physicians participating in LifeBridge Nebraska key confidentiality protections, including:

1. Confidentiality of Participation: Any record of a person’s participation in a physician wellness program is confidential and not subject to discovery, subpoena, or a reporting requirement to the department, unless the person voluntarily requests release of the information in writing, or the physician peer coach determines that the person’s condition constitutes a danger to the public health and safety by the person’s continued practice of medicine or surgery.

2. Protection from Disclosure: A person who contacts or participates in a physician wellness program shall not be required to disclose such contact or participation to any health care facility, hospital, medical staff person, accreditation organization, graduate medical education oversight body, health insurer, government agency, or other entity as a condition of participation, employment, credentialing, payment, licensure, compliance, or other requirement.

Additionally, LB286 adds physician peer coaches to the list of exempt individuals regarding mandatory reporting so long as:

The credentialed physician is serving in the capacity of a physician peer coach in the LifeBridge program; and

The physician receiving peer coaching services does not constitute a danger to the public health and safety by their continued practice or medicine or surgery.

SafeHaven legislation demonstrates Nebraska’s commitment to supporting the mental health and wellness of the physicians in Nebraska. It creates an environment that prioritizes the well-being of medical professionals, enabling them to provide optimal care for their patients.

“We are delighted to see the passing of SafeHaven legislation as part of LB227,” said Dr. Daniel Rosenquist, MD, president of the Nebraska Medical Association. “This legislation affirms Nebraska’s dedication to the well-being of physicians and is a powerful statement of the state’s support for our physicians.”

LifeBridge Nebraska has already made a positive impact on the lives of a number of Nebraska physicians, and with the implementation of SafeHaven legislation, this program is poised to reach even further. LifeBridge Nebraska remains committed to supporting the physician community and is pleased that this legislation recognizes the invaluable contributions of physicians in serving the needs of Nebraskans.

Want to make a difference while focusing on your well-being? Get ready to lace up your sneakers! LifeBridge Nebraska is partnering with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) and joining organizations across the state in striding toward better health and a stronger community on Wednesday, April 26, for National Walk at Lunch (NW@L) Day.

BCBSNE and local YMCAs host NW@L Day annually to encourage the community to walk for 30 minutes any time, any place. Going for a stroll even provides health benefits, like improving your coordination and bone strength.

To participate, mark your calendars for NW@L Day and get moving for 30 minutes.

By joining the fun, you’ll add more movement to your day while supporting a nonprofit making a difference in the community. BCBSNE will donate $5,000 to Special Olympics Nebraska if 10,000 people take the NW@L Day pledge. Additionally, one lucky participating school will win a $1,000 grant for its physical education department.

We hope you’ll join us in making a difference while working on your fitness!
